Germany Opportunity Card Blocked Account: Funding Checklist

A Germany Opportunity Card blocked account is one way to demonstrate that you can support yourself during a job search. It is not a payment for a job or a guarantee of visa approval. Separate the official livelihood requirement from account-provider fees and the money you will need for travel and arrival.

Research checked: 12 October 2026. Check current official requirements before applying.

Confirm the current livelihood requirement

The official Make it in Germany guidance lists at least €1,091 net per month for 2026 and identifies a blocked account or declaration of commitment as ways to demonstrate financing. For twelve months, twelve times that monthly figure is €13,092, before provider fees or other costs. Confirm the requested period and current consular instructions before transferring money.

Distinguish deposit from service charges

A blocked deposit is different from an account-opening charge or an insurance premium. Ask the provider for a written breakdown: required deposit, setup fee, recurring fee, transfer details and refund procedure. Check which confirmation the German mission expects. Compare the document wording, not merely a package advertised as visa-ready.

Prepare a transfer checklist

  • Match the account holder’s name with the passport.
  • Confirm the reference number and receiving-bank details through the provider’s official channel.
  • Review exchange-rate and international-transfer charges.
  • Retain payment and transfer confirmations.
  • Obtain the actual funded-account confirmation requested for the application.

Do not send money to an informal agent’s personal account or share banking verification codes.

Plan the first weeks separately

Create a practical budget for the flight, temporary accommodation, local transport and any housing deposit. A blocked account normally releases funds under its account terms; do not assume the entire deposit will be available immediately for one large expense. Read activation instructions before travelling and keep a separate accessible reserve if your circumstances allow.

Check refund and delay procedures

Ask what happens if a visa is refused, withdrawn or delayed, and which documents the provider needs to release funds. Note the customer-support channel and the procedure for correcting a name or transfer-reference mistake. These are provider-specific matters; do not rely on another person’s refund timetable.

Funding does not replace other eligibility

Organise qualification, language and other documents separately. A sufficient deposit does not prove that you satisfy the Opportunity Card route. Keep a dated funding worksheet showing the official amount used, requested duration, provider charges and transfer status. Recheck the source before applying if your appointment or travel period changes.

Frequently asked questions

Is €13,092 the total cost of moving to Germany?

No. It is twelve times the cited 2026 monthly livelihood figure, before fees, travel and other expenses; confirm your required period.

Does a blocked account guarantee a visa?
