Canada Visitor Visa Invitation Letter: Host and Applicant Checklist

A Canada visitor visa invitation letter can explain why a host is inviting you, where you will stay and how the visit is funded. IRCC sometimes asks for one. It is supporting evidence, not a guarantee that a visa will be issued, and it does not remove the applicant’s responsibility to demonstrate a genuine temporary visit.

What IRCC says about an invitation

IRCC asks the writer to provide truthful information about the invited person, relationship, purpose, proposed duration, accommodation, payment arrangements and planned departure. Its guidance also describes information about the host and status in Canada. A standard visitor invitation does not itself make the host legally responsible for the visitor; do not confuse it with separate programme undertakings.

Ask the host to state the actual support

Does the host provide a room, pay for flights or meet daily expenses? Separate these arrangements clearly. A host offering accommodation only should not state that all expenses will be paid if that is not the plan. Confirm realistic dates and explain the relationship accurately.

Preparation checklist

  • Visitor’s full name and relevant identity/contact information.
  • Host’s accurate identity, contact and status information.
  • Genuine relationship and purpose of the trip.
  • Proposed stay and departure plan.
  • Accommodation address and clear funding arrangements.
  • Supporting records requested by IRCC for the situation.

Review the full official guidance rather than treating this summary as a fixed template.

Make the letter and application agree

Compare the invitation with the applicant’s travel dates, funds, employment leave and family plans. If the host proposes a month but the application asks for six months, identify the real intended duration before submitting. Do not use broad dates merely to make the invitation seem flexible.

Keep applicant evidence separate

The applicant still needs to satisfy visitor eligibility. IRCC considers matters including ties, plans to leave and adequate funds for the stay. Organise the visitor’s own documents alongside the host letter, so it is clear which records explain the host and which explain the applicant. Hosting by a Canadian citizen does not automatically settle the visitor’s eligibility.

Protect personal information and retain a copy

Share the letter and supporting records only through a trusted channel and the appropriate application process. Avoid publishing host addresses or identity documents in a sample online. Keep the actual final letter and its supporting evidence in the application record. If circumstances change, update the explanation truthfully instead of reusing an invitation that no longer reflects the trip.

Frequently asked questions

Does an invitation guarantee a Canada visitor visa?

No. IRCC assesses the applicant’s eligibility; the letter is supporting evidence.

Does the host have to pay all costs?

The letter should describe the genuine arrangements. Do not claim full financial support if only accommodation or another limited form of support is offered.
