UK Business Visitor Visa: Meetings, Interviews and Permitted Activities

A UK business visitor visa is usually discussed within the Standard Visitor route. It can cover specific business activities, but it is not general permission to take a job in the UK. Begin with the activity you will actually perform, who pays you and how the visit relates to your overseas role.

Research checked: 12 October 2026. Check current official requirements before applying.

Examples of permitted business activities

GOV.UK lists activities such as interviews, meetings, conferences and negotiating or signing deals under the applicable visitor rules. Some other professional activities have additional conditions. The official guidance distinguishes these visits from paid work for a UK organisation or client, subject to specific permitted exceptions. Read the rule covering the precise activity, not only the examples.

Describe the purpose in plain language

Write a short factual explanation of the event or meeting, host, location, dates and expected activities. Link it to the invitation or agenda. If several meetings occur at different locations, make the timetable realistic. Avoid describing a visitor as starting a permanent role when the plan is only to attend an interview.

Evidence organisation checklist

  • Host invitation or genuine event registration.
  • Agenda and proposed dates.
  • Relevant overseas employment or business evidence.
  • Clear arrangements for costs and accommodation.
  • Information explaining the return plan.

These are preparation suggestions. Use the official visitor guidance and any specific document instructions for your circumstances.

Check the boundary with employment

An interview invitation and an employment contract are different things. Attending a permitted interview does not mean you can start the job after receiving an offer. Check the appropriate immigration permission before any work begins. If the assignment involves delivering services, training or a specialist activity, review the detailed rules and obtain qualified advice when the classification is unclear.

Avoid conflicting descriptions

Compare the invitation, employer letter and application form. If one calls the trip a conference and another describes a paid work assignment, resolve the difference with truthful revised documentation before submission. Ask the host to state what actually happens, who meets costs and the limited duration. Never use a visitor label to conceal work.

Before travel

Recheck permitted activities and carry relevant evidence of the genuine purpose and travel arrangements. Keep employer or host contacts available. A visa grant does not expand the activities allowed by the route. If the itinerary or assignment materially changes, reassess whether the original permission still fits instead of assuming the same visa covers every business task.

Frequently asked questions

Can I attend a UK job interview as a visitor?

GOV.UK lists interviews among permitted business activities, subject to the visitor rules.

Can I start a job after the interview on the same visitor permission?

Do not assume so. Starting employment requires the appropriate permission; a permitted interview is not a work authorisation.
