UK Sponsor Licence Check: Verify an Employer Before Accepting an Offer

A UK sponsor licence check is a useful first step when a job offer includes sponsorship. The official register lists licensed organisations, but a name appearing on it does not authenticate a recruiter or prove that a particular job is eligible. Compare the employer, role and communications before paying money or sending sensitive documents.

Research checked: 12 October 2026. Check current official requirements before applying.

Use the current official register

GOV.UK publishes the register of licensed sponsors for Worker and Temporary Worker routes. Obtain the current version from the official page rather than a spreadsheet sent by a recruiter. Check the organisation’s entry and the relevant route. An employer’s general business registration is different from its immigration sponsor licence.

Match the actual employer identity

Record the legal entity named in the offer and compare it with the register entry. A trading name may differ from a legal name, so ask the employer to explain the connection. Similar names are not enough. Use contact details independently obtained from the employer’s official website rather than calling only a number supplied by the recruiter.

Practical offer verification checklist

  • Identify the entity employing you.
  • Compare that entity with the official sponsor record.
  • Confirm the vacancy through the employer’s own channel.
  • Check the role, duties, work location and pay in the written offer.
  • Ask who is handling sponsorship and the relevant next steps.
  • Protect your passport scans and account credentials.

This checklist is a verification method, not a government guarantee of a genuine offer.

A licence does not make every job eligible

The Skilled Worker route has separate job, pay and applicant requirements. An employer may hold a licence without sponsoring every vacancy it advertises. Ask about the specific role rather than assuming its licence settles the whole application. Check the current visa guidance if the proposed occupation or sponsorship route is unclear.

Treat payment pressure as a reason to verify

If someone demands urgent payment to reserve sponsorship, independently confirm the demand with the employer and obtain a written explanation of the charge. Check official guidance on which costs belong to the employer or applicant. Do not share one-time passwords or let an unverified recruiter control your immigration account.

Keep a dated verification record

Save the official register version or entry date, offer documents and employer confirmation. Recheck before lodging if time has passed or the offer changes. A register entry can help you ask better questions; it does not guarantee the sponsor will issue sponsorship, that the job is genuine, or that a visa will be approved.

Frequently asked questions

Does a register entry prove my offer is genuine?

No. Verify the specific vacancy and recruiter independently with the employer.

Can every vacancy at a licensed company be sponsored?

Do not assume so. The employer’s plans and the role’s current visa eligibility must be checked separately.
